Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross win Country Music Award for "Old Town Road".

November 15, 2019

Lil Nas X's smash hit Old Town Road includes an unlikely sample from "34 Ghosts IV" produced by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. The sample was originally unauthorized and took Reznor by suprise. However after the proper licensing procedures that followed, Reznor allowed the sample to remain in the infectious tune, which quickly took on a life of its own.

Reznor says he eventually found out of the usage from his management team, recalling, "I said, ‘Look, I’m fine with it. I get how stuff goes. They’re not saying they didn’t sample it. Just work it out but don’t be a roadblock to this.’ I hadn’t heard it yet."

Listen below to hear the key sample that lends a sparse but vital component of 2019's biggest song.
